Consider using the PROBE method below to help the Word sink deeply into your heart during this week.

P – Pray. As you sit down to study, pray for the Holy Spirit to give you insight.

Here’s a sample prayer for when you approach the scriptures:

“Heavenly Father, I bow in your presence. May your Word be my rule, your Spirit my teacher, and your greater glory my supreme concern, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

R = Read. Read the passage over several times to become as familiar with it as you possibly can. Try reading it three ways:

  • Out loud. Let your eye and your ear receive God’s Word.
  • Together. When it comes to Bible reading, the old saying still holds: “Two heads are better than one.”
  • To memorize it. As another psalmist put it, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Ps 119:11). Why shouldn’t we follow suit?

O = Observe. Observe anything in the passage that stands out for you – strange images, repetitions, your feelings as you read. We should use every part of our being to meditate on God’s Word. Look long and hard into the pages of the Word and see what you can see.

B = Behave. Read the Bible with an eye toward discovering how to live your daily life.

E= Express. Once you’ve drawn deeply from the riches of God’s Word, be sure to share them with someone. The Bible tells us to teach and admonish one another. We shouldn’t base that teaching and admonishing on our opinions but on God’s will as revealed to us in the Word.

“I will meditate on your wonderful works.” (Psalm 145:5) The psalmist asks us to take the time and the energy to PROBE the Word of God. It’s really worth it.
